You’ve just met the coolest guy.

He’s cute. He’s funny.

The two of you just had a great conversation and you can feel the tingle of excitement from that initial first moment of chemistry. You want to get to know him better, but your friends are telling you it’s time to leave.

How do you get his number?? Quick! He’s leaving!

This is an all-too-common situation, and I don’t know about you, but as far as I’m concerned it’s one of those little daily tragedies that people are constantly losing potentially amazing partners simply because they don’t know the best technique for getting a guy’s phone number. Use these simple, easy-to-follow techniques and you’ll never have to worry that when you meet a great guy you won’t know how to take it to a first date.

  • Hey Matt! First off, I loved this week’s video. I definitely will be implementing these tips. Secondly, I just last week was out to dinner with a friend and our waiter was totally flirting with me. It was fun flirting back and ended up leaving my business card with the bill as we left. He ended up texting me that night. So tip number one definitely works!!

  • Dear Matthew,
your advice has been incredibly helpful to me over the last few months. Thanks to you I am feeling much more confident and positive when it comes to my social life in general – not only my love life. I even had some of the nicest dates in years!
However, there were situations in which I had to tell a guy that I did not wish to go on another date with him because somewhere along the way I had lost interest in him.
Unfortunately, I never really know what so say in such a moment! How do I tell a guy that I do not wish to see him again without hurting him and his self esteem? Do you have any advice for handling such a situation gracefully? I would really love for you to do a video on the topic!
I wish you all the best,
    Christina

    1. Thanks Christina.

I’ll do a topic on that soon, but it’s a good problem to have in the grand scheme of things ;)

I’d say it’s important to keep it short and sweet if you’re telling him you’re not interested. Just one text would suffice saying that you think he’s a lovely guy but you just don’t see it working for you longer term. Then sign off with with a “thank you” and “Take care”. Keep it brief, clear, but also polite and classy. If a guy doesn’t react well to this then at least you know you’re DEFINITELY better off without him.

      All the best,

      Matt x

  • Very practical tips. I have been in the situation where it is obviously time to trade contact information, and neither person knows how to make it happen. These are non-threatening ways to stay connected. I like the part where you suggest that we see how things go on the phone. However I have found that no one seems to actually speak on the phone any more. Perhaps that is an issue that you can address- how to avoid strictly texting and not having a proper verbal exchange. I am guilty of this also, as I am so busy, that phone conversations are often something I cut out of my day.

    1. Hi Suzanne,

Funnily enough, I talk in extensive detail about how to get a guy on the phone in my program “How To Talk To Men”. I agree it’s a shame that people feel fearful of talking on the phone these days – it’s party a symptom of laziness I think and let’s people get away without developing their social skills. The best way to get a guy to call if he texts too much is to say: “I miss hearing your voice!”, or even just say to him “give me a call tomorrow so we can arrange plans”. If you show you’re confident enough with it and that you expect it, he’s more likely to rise to the challenge.

      Thanks,

      Matt x

  • Wow. You are amazing!

Question. I met a hot guy when I signed up to a new phone plan the other day, I tried to talk a bit but didn’t find out if he was attached or get his number.
He would have had to put my number and name in the computer though for the phone plan so if he really wanted…

Should I go back in and maybe ask if he’s with someone or ask him for his number, or should I call it a practice one and leave it?

    Thanks :)
