  • Thank you for the video. I have stage four cancer. I am also a mother of teens that still need me. Lately I have become overwhelmed at night with stress. My medicine gives me high blood pressure, so it is really important for me to chill out. I remind myself to watch funny movies, listen to great music and surround myself with supportive people. I believe this strategy of letting one soldier in at a time and dealing specifically with him will help.

    1. Ramona,

I wanted to say, from once cancer patient to another, don’t let this journey defeat you! You’re on the right path with the choices you’re making; watching funny movies, self checks to “chill out” :) and listening to great music. I don’t know how far along you are on your cancer journey, and I too know how overwhelming it can be raising children while struggling with your health (my kiddos are 4 and 9).

But I do know that everything you’re doing makes a difference (for the better) toward healing. And the people you surround yourself with do too. That doesn’t mean you won’t have days here and there of feeling overwhelmed (I still do) but you have the right tools in your utility belt to kick cancer’s ass! I’m a stage 3 survivor myself and I want you to know you’re never alone, there are so many of us out here. I wish Matt had put a video out like this when I was going through my treatments last year, this strategy of battling stress like a Spartan is pretty ingenious!

No matter what cancer takes from you; energy, mental clarity, quality of life – the one thing it can never take is your inner strength to keep going. Remember that, you are so much stronger than you know. Hold on to the people and the moments that matter most, and you will find that strength to keep moving forward. I wish you only the best on your journey and hope you find yourself on the road to survivorship very soon.

      Best,
      Amber

  • One soldier can be many, but when you’ve lost your last two jobs to external influences outside of your control, how do I stay positive??

My sphere in work (IT Business An analyst) is becoming so competitive…If you can’t tick every single box of their key selection criteria, employers won’t even look at you! GRRRRR

  • Hi Matt!

Thank you so much for posting this video. This technique for managing stress is so simple and quite ingenious at the same time! I think it’s going to help me out tremendously in the weeks to come; a new semester for me, a new school year for my munchkins loaded with soccer, dance, homework and assignments.

Your “love life” and dating/relationship advise is on point, but I really enjoy when you post these “hack my life” style videos too. I find them so much more useful since dating isn’t my top priority right now, getting my sh*t together is.

Thank you Matt and keep doing what you do!

    Amber :)

  • I can totally relate to getting overwhelmed when trying to battle all your soldiers at the same time guilty thanks a lot Matt actually I have tried that technique before but without noticing hehee when I had to do my engineering thesis my mind was creating a new thing to do by the second so I started a list of things I would do after my thesis if it could wait and it wasn’t really an emergency like a healt issue or an urgent debt it went on they list that gave me a chance to battle my ” undefeatable” soldier and kick that thesis’ butt thank for helping me remember and internalize the strategy hehe love you Matt hehe DC* from Venezuela

  • Thank you Mathew. You have no idea how I needed that today. Why are you not on the Today show anymore? Your segment was my favorite especially, when you worked solo. You have a gift. You need to reach more people. Are you televised? If not you should have your own show her in the U.S.

  • Thank you, Matt! It is true that it’s not only finding Mr. Wonderful it’s also the other factors in life that needs to be worked on to. And, who really wants to be with someone who is constantly stressed! I do believe in baby steps but your advice was on point, which was an eye opener. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still waiting for Mr. Wonderful but I’m a believer in timing and why things happen the way they do! Mahalo Nui Loa (thank you very much) from Hawaii!

  • Hi Matt,

Great video! Thank you, I so needed to hear this, as overwhelm has been a close companion, lol.

Question…in the video shot of the 4 men looking out from the castle…you, your brother and your father and…

    could it be John Ross?!?!

    Yes?

    He’s real after all???

Those of us that have attended the retreat want to know, please!

    Lol, :)

PS C’mon, you finally let us see Jameson, we thought he was a figment in your imagination too…

  • Fabulous post, I’m very good at managing my stress but every now and them I become overwhelmed and find it difficult to get over it or even understand how I’ve become overwhelmed. your way of looking at it explained that and will be helpful in re grounding myself. Many thanks Matthew You’re a delight to watch, listen to and learn from. Wishing you continued success in all that you do :-)

  • I love this video! It’s really well thought through. A story followed by how to apply it in your life.. Thank you so much.

  • You’re such a clever, organic thinker. I love your ability to synthesize seemingly disparate concepts and challenges into metaphors that express something universal. This is a great one. xo

  • Wow! This couldn’t have come at a better time. Often, I’m overwhelmed with all the tasks I need to complete and then am paralyzed by the stress of it all.I so appreciate the reminder to take one thing at a time.

    Excellent video! Very impressive! :)

  • Dear Matt, I would like to send you a good wine from Transilvania for this video. Can you provide a hotel address you will be going soon?
    I mean it.

  • Good movie reference… I took pride in my handling wave after wave. I even heckled and taunted each challenge. Then, I was diagnosed with a game changer, and the treatments have impacted my cognitive functions. Now, my mind can barely handle each wave. The mundane have become Herculean in nature. Formulating blinkin’ sentences can be strenuous. How do you maintain stamina? (This would be a great series of videos or a new book.)

  • Hi Matt

Great video. To deal with my stress this is exactly what I do lol. I figure out which one needs to be done first or more important, do that then move to the next one I find making a list and checking it off helps.
