My SCARY Journey To The Top

So…I realised I’m scared of dying.

Not exactly shocking news, but I had one of those moments in this week’s video, climbing up the steps of the Peñon de Guatapé in Colombia when I thought “PLEASE JUST LET ME SURVIVE THIS!”

On your way up the mountain, everything is scary.

We might fall and come crashing down to where we started. Or the journey upwards will be arduous and painful, and we never quite know for sure whether we’re going to ever reach our destination.

We all have our summits to reach in life… in our health, relationships, career. Getting to that target weight, writing that book we keep talking about, meeting that person and being fulfilled in our personal life – it can all seem scary to begin, especially when we worry about getting stuck in the middle and wondering what to do next.

So this video is my KICK UP THE BUTT… not just as a reminder to you, but to me.

One step at a time.

  • Thanks for the interesting vid and message. Fascinating place. On a more prosaic note, wouldn’t it be scarier coming down all those steps?

I’ll keep following – thanks, Matthew – for the encouragement and the wisdom.

  • Thank you for making the video, looks totally awesome. I had a freak out moment this week. I’ve been trying so hard and one thing after another was stalling or unraveling. And I thought about going back down the mountain for a minute, now I’m onwards and upwards again with, quite strangely, almost no fear. I had an epiphany moment. I thought, you know, it’s perfectly normal to feel all the emotions I was experiencing. Just that realisation, I was so fed up of always having to act like everything is okay like I’d been lobotomised, for a moment I could be not okay. It’s turned everything around so I can see clearer than before. Co-incidentally people came into my days to inspire and other rubbish, unhelpful people fell away.
I don’t even know why I’m telling you this, other than I love your great adventure video, that you brought us another great message from Matt. You are wonderful.

  • Hi, thanks for the video and a fun Sunday inspiration prep talk.
Apart from that: which song is that in the background of the video?
Thanks a lot and have a wonderful Sunday! Daja

  • Hi Matthew! This was an interesting video with the analogy of climbing a mountain being similar to trying to climb a mountain in our lives. I liked the reminder of looking at the small steps we are making or have made as opposed to the steps we still need to complete to reach the top.
    Thank you, Angelina

  • I really needed to hear this message this morning. Thank you. You’ve helped me build confidence in my one new step for today.

  • Wendy has a point. Going down would be alot more freaky than climbing up.(Don’t look back down as you are making the climb.) Great metaphor for life! Awesome site from the top though. Helen xxo

  • Just blocked my FWB!!!I think iam finally ready!Lets do this!!!!!Thank you so much you were reading my mind this morning! You are amazing!!!!!!!

  • Hi Matthew, I really enjoyed this video! Very motivational! I would have been right there with you as far as heights go. :) What a beautiful view! Thank you for sharing this.

  • Thanks for this video Matthew! It pertains to what is going on in my life right now…Amazing…how you seem to touch on the particular subject when we need it! Odd…but wonderful! Glad you were able to conquer your fear..one step at a time…& looking at it at a different perspective. Looking back & seeing how far you have gone..instead of looking ahead with fear…Wonderful advice…& that’s the way I have been looking at my recent struggles lately…Looking ahead & accomplishing things with “baby steps” & realizing how far I have come in my life…at this particular point…& realizing there is positive thinking in knowing I am only going to reach higher & higher …and NOT look back anymore….Looking forward to meeting you very soon…So excited about that! Hugs & Cheers! Another wonderful video…Nice to know you have challenges in your life too! To know you are like everyone else….;) <3

  • I appreciate your video this week. I’m very afraid of heights, but will be in the mountains of Montana next year. I will be driving along the edge of mountain cliffs. In addition, I am in the beginning of training for a 10 mile hike with elevation. I will use your advice to get through this.

  • Thank you Matt for sharing your journeys in the world and in your mind, and for continuing supplying these “baby steps” for us :) I love it !

  • “omg I’m high, I got some altitude along the way”…. “look down & see how far I’ve come” … Feels beautiful and nourishing to look at things that way! Now I’m feeling like swimming under waterfalls and watching Romancing the Stone, Matthew. What you do is so great! You encourage and equip many! Yay! Thank you.

  • Hi Matt! I loved the blog this morning. I had a big athletic competition today on the road to an Olympic qualifier and I was SCARED!! Jamison’s shot of step 200 was what I held in my mind on the way to the start. I told myself to just take the next step, and the next, and the next. And remember to laugh as the metaphorical kids whiz by and demoralize us all a little bit! My day went well. Thanks for taking life by the horns!

  • Thank you for being SO real!

That was such an inspiring video!

As you know, saying it and doing it are two different things. Really appreciate that you shared this metaphoric journey with us.

    Keep walking the walk, Coach!!!

  • That was awesome!!! Congratulations on making it to the top!! Great reminder to look back and see how far you’ve come! Be grateful!

  • Thank you for your inspiring words. You should come to Hawaii :) I’ve tried Koko Head with 1000 steps and of course more hiking spots for you to try here in Oahu.

  • Matt gracias por tanta motivación!! :D
Thanks for the awesome video and for being such an inspiration in every sense. Certainly everything that happens to us and everyone we know can teach us something ;)

  • Matthew,
No one can surpass you in the brevity and perceptiveness with which you always make your point of view. FANTASTIC VIDEO!!!!

    Jameson,
I am enchanted by this video! You capture the vibe and the aura of the place, while following Matthew. I felt I was traveling with you!!!!
