I have been told repeatedly by men that my conversation is the best thing that happens to them in their week. However, they date other women, despite my wit and intellectual depth and sharing. So where is the missing link?
Mary, an an older woman now in a relationship (but still come here to “refresh”) I can tell you that it’s important to strike a balance so as not to come off as a “smarty-pants”. And it’s all about feeling good, men hang around us when we make them feel good… always remember that men’s egos are fragile no matter how old they are or how important they’ve become, so try not to make it all about you (not saying that you do, just suggesting you keep an eye on that), try to make your date feel good about himselves with well-placed compliments, men love being appreciated, so you could compliment on his choice of restaurant or whatever, and you will see him coming back…

As an intelligent older woman who’s seen this at work, especially in my present relationship, I can testify how true it is. The key is to strike a balance and not give the impression of trying to show off or brag all the time, I know someone close to me who is very very smart but she usually scared men away because it was all about her… As I told someone who commented she can’t keep guys around who’ve enjoyed her conversations, we also need to make sure that our date feels good about himself so he wants to “come back for more”.
And Matthew, you can’t expect to please everyone, this world is made up of way too many personalities, some people are way too picky, simply very hard to please and feel that their opinion is “it”, but if any of them are reading this, my advice would be to EASE UP or you’ll stay single and unhappy forever…

I miss the days of great brainal, which I have yet to find since my last real relationship – that was three years ago! It’s been hard to find as I find it hard to chit chat for very long for me. I’ve never been one to talk in circles for long and rather be direct. I know the answer to that one, but I just don’t know how to do it.

OMG that was good! You are so goofy I love a man who can be all things… goofy, smart, challenging and so easy to look at and listen too. Then there is that added spark of genius about what it means to be human dealing with other humans (male or female, really!).
I think the goofy (and I mean that as a compliment) highlights what you speak about on meeting new people. Be a bit silly and charming… and Matthew you have that covered in spades!
